OK, I know what you're thinking. So soon Lydia? You just wrote one last night. And I say to you, "I know, I know, but this is my blog, so be quiet."
I've now found that I enjoy reviewing books I love on my blog. I feel that I get deserved names out there, even if some of them won't need it, and plus, this isn't school, so I can pick any Michael Crichton book I want. Which is what I choose today.
Jurassic Park
By: Michael Crichton
Now, this book, nor any of his others, can be what are considered "great literature." But what they do have, is fun, suspense, and outside the box ideas. I remember the first time I tried to crack the already broken spine of my brother's well worn copy of this book. I think I was about fifth grade? I don't think I even got ten pages in before my mom had it forbidden for me to read. Now before you go hatin' on my mom, you have to admit, the language and bloody content of the book may not be completely suitable for an eleven year old. Although I don't think that's the case with me, I think she just feared I might have gotten some ideas from it or something. Heck, I didn't even see the movie until I was about 13 or 14. I know, I was a more obedient child back then. lol
OK, for those of you who weren't born yet, or lived under a rock during the year 1993, "Jurassic Park" is about am extremely wealthy investor who finds a way to clone and bring to life dinosaurs. The movie features five, maybe six species, but the book has more than twenty. One of my fondest memories associated with this book, was hanging out in an empty classroom with two of my best friends administering a spelling contest to see who could spell the names of the dinosaurs the closest.
Anyway, so the park has issues (of course) and specialists are flown in to asses the safety of the park, terror and chaos ensue.
The book is quite different from the movie. As usual. First of all, John Hammond, the wealthy investor is no where near as sweet or grandfatherly as he is in the movie. In fact, he dies in the book, quite deservedly. Alan Grant actually likes kids, in fact if I remember correctly, I think it's page 56 where he says that. LOL Lex is the younger sibling and quite a spoiled brat, and Tim is the dinosaur loving older brother.
There is certainly a lot more peril in the book, surprisingly than there is in the movie. One of my favorite parts is when people are stuck in a building as raptors gnaw at metal bars to get in and eat them all. LOL
I read this book once a year all through my high school career. It sat in one pocket for five straight years in my back pack. And during free time I would pull it out and read it. I even did a prose with the famous raptor/kitchen scene. I even broke with it once. I still had braces and a palette expander so, thank goodness I had my binder, or all the judges in the front row would have been sprayed. LOL
For anyone who loves science fiction, adventure, danger, and like my mom says to me all the time, "Things eating things," and of course, dinosaurs. This the read for you. But I'm sure, that if you love dinosaurs, you've already read it. LOL
